Day 8.
As it was the weekend, we took a stroll toward Harajuku in an attempt to catch a glimpse of some cosplay girls walking along Tekeshita Street. Along the way we passed a market selling all kinds of clothing and food. There was even a dance stage where b-boys were popping and locking and even a tap-group was getting all ghetto. The park we walked past had a large monument but I'm not sure what it was for. After almost slipping and falling on the infamous ice that had formed on the sidewalks we reached Harajuku station, but alas there were no cosplayers in sight. We stopped for some crepes at Marion Crepes and then headed to the local shrine. We looked at some huge fish and a Amelia fell up a ramp.
Later in the day we thought we'd try going up one of the towers such as Tokyo Tower or the new Skytree and since a few of us had seen the Tokyo tower already, we decided to try the Skytree. We took a train to Oshiage and the Skytree City complex is basically attached to the station. Up a few levels from the platform are some shops and restatuarants, but also some things like a planetarium and other activity centres like augmented reality game spaces for young children where you can become an anime character.
There is also an outdoor walkway which has a cafe with a courtyard you can look up at the tower (I guess while you smoke), and a Ghibli/Miyazaki store.
By the time we got to the Skytree ticket gates there was such a long line that we weren't going to be able to get in until after 6:30pm so we figured we'd come back another day and maybe be able to book the tickets online and not waste so much time waiting in line. In the meantime we checked out the World BEER Museum. (yes, 'BEER' is in capitals) and got some lunch from the food court.
Since the last day the Tsukiji Fish Market closed season was today, some of us thought we'd get a shot at trying to see the Tuna Auctions they have open to the public tomorrow morning. We had a rough idea where we needed to go and planned out the stations and times we'd need to be at to get to the fish market admin office by 4:30am.
